WEST BABYLON - Authorities say a veteran NYPD officer and father of four from West Babylon was fatally shot while responding to a robbery in Brooklyn early this morning. Officials say officer Peter Figoski was part of a back-up team that was responding to a robbery at an apartment at 25 Pine St. in the Cypress Hills area at around 2 a.m. Figoski was shot in the face after he was confronted by one of the suspects. Investigators say Figoski's partner, officer Glen Escada, pursued and arrested the alleged shooter, Lamont Pride. A second suspect in the robbery is still on the loose, officials say. Figoski was a highly decorated officer who was on the force for 22 years, officials say. He made more than 200 arrests and was awarded 12 medals, eight of them for exceptional police work. He was also well-liked by his neighbors in the West Babylon community where he raised his four daughters, ages 14-20.New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg met with Figoski's family today to offer his condolences.

Flags were flown at half-staff around the city today to honor the fallen hero.
