NORTHPORT - Soccer fields in Northport that were badly damaged by vandals last month were patched up in time for an important charity event.

Thousands of people took to the fields Saturday for the Northport Cow Harbor Soccer Tournament, which raises money for breast cancer research.

Just weeks ago, organizers weren't sure if the event could go on. Vehicles had been driven all over the fields, ripping up the grass and leaving deep gashes.

Suffolk police say four teens were arrested and charged with second-degree criminal mischief in connection with the case.

Several games had to be rescheduled as a result of the vandalism, and police say there was about $10,000 in damages.

At Saturday's tournament, however, participants tried to ignore some of the marks that still scar the fields and instead focus on the important cause that brought them out. A raffle was held, and players wore pink socks.

Proceeds will go toward the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund.
