Va. man charged in LI friend's heroin overdose

LONG BEACH - Police in Long Beach say they have arrested a Virginia man last night for allegedly giving his friend a fatal dose of heroin in February of 2010.

Deputy Inspector Bruce Meyer, of the Long Beach Police Department, says it took more than a year to gather enough evidence to charge 40-year-old Robert Michalski with manslaughter in the death of Robbie Michelman.

The victim's family says the two men had been friends since childhood.

Michelman's uncle, Howard Michelman, says a major clue is where the heroin needle was found the day of the fatal overdose.

"It was injected into his left arm, [but] Robbie was a lefty so he didn't inject it," he says.

Michalski was also charged with criminal injection of a narcotic drug. If convicted, he could face up to 19 years behind bars.
