WOODBURY - There have been some big changes made to school lunches in order to abide by new USDA rules.

Those rules include having fewer carbohydrates on students' plates and adding more fruits and vegetables. School lunches must also now include age-appropriate calorie limits and more offerings of vegetable proteins.

Children will not be forced to take all the fruits and vegetables under the new rules, but schools must offer various food groups.

"Our part here is to try and encourage the children to try new foods," said Deborah Shaw, principal of Meadow Drive Elementary in Mineola.
