The driver and his passenger were able to escape without injury.

WOODBURY - An unknown mechanical malfunction is being blamed for the raging car fire that closed the Long Island Expressway during this morning's rush.

Flames engulfed the car on the westbound side of the LIE at exit 64 in Medford. Traffic was stopped as police and firefighters put out the blaze and cleared the car from the road.

The driver and his passenger were able to escape without injury.
