BROOKVILLE - Ten children from the war-torn region of Kharkov, Ukraine enjoyed the grounds at LIU Post in Brookville Tuesday before undergoing important medical procedures.
Many of the children were taken to the United States through the humanitarian program Operation Hearts and Homes. They were brought here for medical needs not available in their country, as well as to get away from the chaos of war.
Dr. Thomas Demaria, of LIU Post, says the children are facing dental procedures and eye surgeries in the coming days. Their goal Tuesday was to have the children relax and enjoy the campus.
The children attended a birthday party and enjoyed a swimming pool.
Through art therapy, many of the children had an opportunity to express their feelings about what's happening back home.
One of their illustrations was of military vehicles and says "stop war."
Some of the eye surgeries will be performed Wednesday in New York City.
