EAST MEADOW - The Twin Rinks Ice Center in East Meadow has filed for bankruptcy only 14 months after its grand opening.

Majority owner Joel Freedman told News 12 that while the construction of the facility was expected to cost about $15 million, it actually cost a little more than $52 million. The owners are now trying to unload their assets.

Freedman says that in due time, bidding will begin in an effort to find a new owner for the rink.

News 12 reached out to the Nassau County Executive's office for comment. They said that county attorneys are reviewing the bankruptcy process and would consider a sale to an "appropriate purchaser with the necessary experience to operate a public-private facility."

The filing comes as the county plans to enter into a public-private partnership in which the New York Islanders would spend $5 million to refurbish the ice rink at Cantiague Park in Hicksville, with the county allowing the team to practice there.

The Twin Rinks Ice Center was the site of the 2015 State of the County address three months ago.
