HEMPSTEAD - The Town of Hempstead has declared a war on potholes, nearly doubling its fleet of repair trucks on the roadways.
Hempstead Superintendent Kate Murray says the Highway Department, which would normally handle pothole problems, has been cross-training workers in the Parks Department and Sanitation Department to help get a handle on the dangerous gaps in the road.
“Just like in a real war, we are calling up reinforcements to increase the number of town workers to fight the war on potholes,” said Murray.
Many of the holes on Hempstead Turnpike that have plagued drivers this winter have been repaired.
News 12 Long Island cameras spotted repairs being made to Hempstead Turnpike and the Northern State Parkway.
Drivers can report any potholes that they spot on state roads by calling 1-800-POTHOLE.
