MERRICK - Some Town of Hempstead homeowners say they are not happy with a plan to eliminate backdoor garbage pickup in July.

The backdoor service was offered in Merrick, North Merrick, Lido Beach, Point Lookout and Bellmore for the past 50 years. When the Town of Hempstead took over trash removal from a private firm, the service was grandfathered in.

Residents who live in the rest of the Town of Hempstead and pay the same amount for garbage collection must bring their trash to the curb.

News 12 asked the Town of Hempstead to respond to concerns regarding the sudden end to the backdoor pickup.  The town sent a statement, saying in part, "The new policy will provide fairness for all customers, and it will result in an estimated $1 million in annual savings for our taxpayers."

The backdoor pickup is scheduled to end July 25.
