FARMINGVILLE - The Town of Brookhaven is considering making its landfill bigger to make its coffers fatter.The town board is currently debating if it should ask the state for permission to expand the Yaphank landfill, the largest one on Long Island.Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko says he wants to add 50 feet to the landfill's height for financial reasons. The landfill already generates $45 million each year for the town, and he says expanding it would bring in millions more, which would prevent him from slashing services.But locals and environmentalists oppose the idea. Many who live near the landfill already complain about the smell, and environmentalists say they want to see the town shut the landfill, not add to it.
