Tigers-Yankees playoff opener set to pick up tonight

NEW YORK - (AP) - The playoff opener between the Detroit Tigersand New York Yankees has been suspended yesterday because of rain in thesecond inning, perhaps wiping out the ace of each pitching stafffor a few days.

Justin Verlander started for Detroit against CC Sabathia onFriday night in a highly anticipated matchup between two of thegame's best pitchers. The score was tied at 1 in the middle of thesecond inning when play was halted.

According to a rule adopted by Major League Baseball two yearsago, the game is not postponed. Instead, it will pick up tonight at the point of suspension - weather permitting - with theYankees coming to bat in the second inning.

Game 2 will be moved back to Sunday.
