MILLER PLACE - The death of a teenager trying to cross Route 25A in Miller Place Tuesday has prompted a call for more safety measures on the heavily trafficked roadway.

The latest incident occurred at the intersection of Route 25A and Miller Place Road. John Luke, 16, was struck by a westbound SUV. No charges were filed.

As News 12 has reported, there were three crashes that resulted in injuries along the roadway in one week’s time in June 2013. The crashes sent five people to the hospital.

Those incidents prompted a call for the state’s Department of Transportation to conduct a safety review of the road. The DOT improved lane markings, enhanced turn lanes and center median markings, but some said that wasn't enough.

Critics say Route 25A is too wide, that the speed limit is too fast and that there are not enough crosswalks.

Eric Alexander, from Vision Long Island, says six pedestrians died on the roadway between 2011 and 2013. He suggests reducing the speed limit, lane narrowing and using countdown timers at crosswalks as ways to reduce accidents.

Vision Long Island says Long Island has six out of the 10 most injury/accident-prone highways in the entire state.
