HEMPSTEAD - Officials say a teen was hit by a police officer's vehicle in Hempstead today.

Darrell Florence says his son, Jaden, was hit on his bike by an unmarked police car. The 13-year-old was being chased because someone said he allegedly snatched a gold chain off of some woman's neck.

Several witnesses say they actually heard the police car accelerate moments before the teen was hit.

The Village of Hempstead's Mayor Wayne Hall told News 12 Long Island that while police were pursuing the teen, they accidentally bumped into him. According to Hall, there is a possibility that there was a brake failure on the police vehicle.

The 13-year-old is due in court Monday morning to face robbery charges. Police say the teen was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.
