Teen arrested after firework injures 6 in Hempstead school

Officials say a 15-year-old is facing arson charges after allegedly throwing a firework into a Hempstead middle school and injuring six people, including a pregnant

HEMPSTEAD - Officials say a 15-year-old is facing arson charges after allegedly throwing a firework into a Hempstead middle school and injuring six people, including a pregnant woman.

Officials say Oumar Barry is accused of throwing a firecracker into the Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School on Greenwich Avenue around 10:20 a.m.

According to police, six people, ages 18 to 47, were taken to the hospital for minor injuries sustained mostly during the evacuation process. One person suffered burns to the side of his face and leg.

Chief Joseph Wing, of the Hempstead Village Police Department, says a pregnant woman experienced abdominal pain after the incident.

Barry is expected to be arraigned today.
