SYOSSET - The head of the Syosset School District defended her six-figure salary tonight during a board meeting at South Woods Middle School.

Dr. Carole Hankin has a total compensation package worth more than $500,000 a year, making her the highest-paid superintendent in New York State.

Hankin has come under fire for her salary since Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) announced his plan to cap superintendent salaries. However, the board and some residents defended Hankin and credited her for making the Syosset district one of the best on Long Island.

Other parents say with the poor economy and rising school taxes, Hankin's salary is simply too high. They argue the money would be better spent on their children's education and school activities.
