MALVERNE - A Malverne family awoke to a thunderous crash early this morning to find that an SUV had smashed right into their living room.

The crash happened at Hempstead and Ocean avenues at around 6 a.m. Police say the driver of a BMW lost control of his car and plowed into the back of the home.

The SUV took out part of the house, collapsing the staircase and trapping the Ortega family on the second floor. They had to be rescued by firefighters.

Fire officials say the driver was pinned inside his vehicle, but no one in the home was hurt. The driver, whose identity has not been released, was hospitalized with unspecified injuries.

The Ortegas say it did not seem that the driver was on drugs or alcohol, but police have not yet said whether any substances could have been a factor in the crash.

A building inspector says no one will be allowed back in the home until it's inspected by structural engineers. He says it's possible the home could be condemned. To watch Chopper 12 video from over the scene of the crash, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and select 'iO Extra.'
