Suspicious odor causes temporary closure of Winthrop ER

MINEOLA - The emergency room of Winthrop Hospital in Mineola was shut down Saturday evening for about four hours after an unknown odor made patients sick.

Police say the incident began at Maple Place where police found a man passed out in his car. Upon trying to rescue him, three police officers and an EMT were exposed to an unknown substance.

The man and the officers were transported to Winthrop Hospital for evaluation. Officials say that when they got there, other patients in the emergency room began feeling sick.

The emergency room was reopened at around 9 p.m. All those sickened by the exposure are expected to be OK.

Police are still investigating the exact cause of the odor.
