SMITHTOWN - Suffolk County's smoking cessation program may become the next victim of the county's budget problems. Funding for the program that helps smokers quit was not included in County Executive Steve Bellone's (D-Suffolk) proposed budget. Another program potentially on the chopping block is HealthSmart, which teaches children about health topics, such as drinking, smoking and sexually transmitted diseases. Suffolk Legislator William Spencer (D-18th District), who is also a doctor, says he hopes there's a way to preserve the programs. However, Bellone's office says eliminating both programs would save the county about $2 million next year.Bellone outlines fiscal recovery plan in State of the County speechSuffolk Co.
