Suffolk County officials are warning residents about a scam involving bogus red light camera tickets. Residents have reported getting emails that appear to be official

SHOREHAM - Suffolk County officials are warning residents about a scam involving bogus red light camera tickets. Residents have reported getting emails that appear to be official summonses from the county's Red Light Safety program. Authorities say the emails are actually a scheme to make quick cash off of unsuspecting victims. The emails claim that the recipient was captured on camera running a red light. They threaten license points if no payment is received. Officials say legitimate summonses for traffic violations are never sent online. Real red light tickets are sent to legal addresses through the mail.Additionally, whenever a resident is caught on camera running a red light, photos and videos of the incident are available for review on Suffolk County's website.

The Suffolk County Computer Crimes Unit says it is investigating.
