OCEAN BEACH - Officers with the Suffolk Police Marine Bureau say they rescued eight people from a boat that was taking on water in the Great South Bay early Saturday morning.

Police say two officers were out on the water at around 2:20 a.m. when they spotted a 32-foot Carrera boat that was taking on water. Both of its engines had failed. The boat was about a third of a mile north of Ocean Beach, police say.

According to police, the officers tied up the boat with the eight people aboard and towed it back to Ocean Beach, where the officers helped remove water from the boat.

The boat's operator, 23-year-old Paul Collins, of East Islip, was issued summonses for having an unregistered boat and for non-functional navigation lights, police say.
