STONY BROOK - The Suffolk police officer who was shot Thursday morning had his status upgraded to fair condition Friday afternoon.

Doctors say Officer Mark Collins, a 12-year veteran, is conscious and responsive. He was shot twice in Huntington Station after a traffic stop by alleged gunman Sheldon Leftenant.

The 22-year-old is a suspected member of the “Tip Top Boyz” gang. He was previously arrested in connection to a 2011 shooting in Huntington Station. Officials say he was out on probation at the time of the shooting.

Leftenant pleaded guilty in connection with that 2011 shooting and was sentenced to one year behind bars and five years of probation. He's now charged with attempted murder and resisting arrest.

Leftenant is being held without bail.
