LAKE RONKONKOMA - Suffolk police say they have recovered the body of the kayaker who went missing in Lake Ronkonkoma last week.
The body of 40-year-old Kevin Conley, of Sound Beach, was found at around noon and was taken to the office of the medical examiner.
Investigators say poor visibility combined with the lake's deep peaks and valleys prolonged their search and forced them to rely on sonar, which eventually led them to Conley. Police say his body was found at a depth of about 45 feet and was retrieved by divers.
Back on Aug. 14, witnesses said they saw the man call for help and then go under the water as his life vest came off, sparking a search effort.
News 12 spoke last week with Conley's father, Harold Conley, who said his son was suffering from Huntington's disease, an incurable, degenerative brain disease. Conley's father also said his son's kayak had a hole in it, and surmised that was why it sunk.
The empty kayak was found the day after Conley went missing.
Reached this afternoon, Harold Conley remembered his son as a "good kid" who would make him breakfast every day.
