CEDAR BEACH - Suffolk police divers spent today scouring coves and inlets between Gilgo and Oak beaches where human remains have been found, looking not only for clues, but also for Shannan Gilbert, a New Jersey woman whose disappearance sparked the investigation.

Back in December, police were searching for Gilbert, a Craigslist prostitute, when they found the remains of four other prostitutes dumped along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach.

Then in the past few weeks, an intensive search uncovered more human remains, bringing the body count to as many as 10 victims.

Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer today said he wouldn't comment on reports that an infant and an adult man were among the recently discovered remains, until the medical examiner's office completes its analysis.

"At this time, we will not speculate on age, gender and conditions of victims," Dormer said during a news conference this afternoon.

Police also announced today that they do not believe the Suffolk murders are connected to the case in Atlantic City where four prostitutes were found murdered in 2006.

Nassau police will be continuing their search tomorrow and have requested Suffolk police assistance with K-9 units.

Later this week, FBI planes will be flying over Ocean Parkway using high-resolution aerial imaging. Police will scan the photos to see if they can spot additional remains.

Meanwhile, Dormer said he needs the public's help in finding whoever is responsible for the killings. Suffolk police have already received more than 600 tips, and Dormer is urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
