HAUPPAUGE - Suffolk County lawmakers unanimously approved a bill that would place two preferred parking spots for veterans at each of the 110 county office parking lots in the county.

Legislator Tom Muratore (R – Selden) wrote the bill. He says its goal is to show respect for the sacrifices made by those who served.

"We should do everything we possibly can to assist our veterans, because without them - I don't know if we would have what we have today," says Muratore.

Despite the 18-0 vote in its favor, some veterans told News 12 that they don't need a special parking space.

Jim Tully, an 80-year-old Army veteran from Centereach, says the spaces should be reserved for the handicapped only.

"Just because I'm a veteran, I don't think I should be afforded that opportunity," says Tully.

The bill still needs Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone's signature to become law.
