BAY SHORE - The Suffolk police officer accused of causing a fatal wrong-way crash in West Islip pleaded not guilty to a reckless endangerment charge.

Officer Robert Scheuerer, 24, was arraigned at Southside Hospital, where he is in critical condition.

Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Marc Lindermann says Scheuerer's attending physician deemed him competent to go through the arraignment.

Detectives say the off-duty officer was driving the wrong way on Sunrise Highway when he slammed into a van last week. The impact caused the van to catch fire and killed its driver.

The officer's toxicology results have not come back yet.

Scheuerer's bail was set at $250,000 bond or $150,000 cash. He was suspended without pay after the incident.

Police have not yet identified the victim because they say they cannot find next of kin.
