CENTRAL ISLIP - A Flanders man convicted in a deadly DWI crash was sentenced Thursday to 12 ½ to 25 years in prison.

Police say Joseph Perez, 31, had a blood alcohol level that was nearly three times the legal limit when he drove onto the shoulder of Montauk Highway near Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays last year. Donna Sartori, of Middle Island, was delivering newspapers at 4 a.m. when she was struck and killed by Perez.

Perez was found guilty of manslaughter last month.

Before receiving his maximum sentence, the judge called Perez "a cold, heartless, uncaring human being."

"We still didn't get any remorse from him. That will just never be forgotten," said Debra Fox, the victim's sister. "It just shows you that the judge made the right decision."

Perez will not be eligible for parole until 2028.
