PORT JEFFERSON STATION - Educators and parents came together Saturday in Port Jefferson Station for a special conference focusing on students and the "opt-out" movement.

Scores of parents across Long Island have had their children opt out of the controversial Common Core standardized tests.

"It's not just about the tests and scores," says Jen Carpenter, a Commack parent. "When we look at our children, we want to encourage their strengths and support their weakness so they can be fully participating adults so they can be conscious, caring adults."

Attendees also discussed Betsy Devos, President Trump's nominee for secretary of education. Pamela Verity, of Commack, says if she is confirmed, public schools will be under attack.

"She wants to push charter schools and a voucher system right here in New York and all over the country," she says. "Her track record in Detroit is horrific. She destroyed public education system there and we won't let that happen here."
