PATCHOGUE - Suffolk bus riders could be in for a more costly commute as lawmakers are considering a bus fare hike. Legislator Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk) says the county has few options besides raising the main bus fare from $1.50 to $2. He says the bus system is heavily subsidized by the county and state, and has a $1 million budget gap that needs to be plugged. Schniederman notes that there hasn't been a fare hike in nearly 19 years. Some bus riders who spoke to News 12 Long Island today were angry to hear about a possible hike. Others say a few extra quarters are worth the trip.
