Study: 1 in 5 U.S. kids live in poverty

WOODBURY - According to a national study on child well-being, one in five kids in the U.S. lives below the poverty line.

The New York State Council on Children and Families says in Nassau County, 7.6 percent of children lived in poverty in 2009, which was a 1.2-percent increase from the year before.

In Suffolk, 7.5 percent of children lived below the poverty line in 2009 compared with 6.9 percent in 2008.

Experts, however, say the number of kids living in poverty on Long Island is actually much higher.

"What doesn't get taken into account there is regional costs," says Gwen O'Shea, of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island.
