BELLMORE - Students in Bellmore learned about World War II from a Long Island veteran today.

Bernard Radar, 89, has been honored with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service during World War II. Radar today shared his personal story with students at John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore.

Radar suffered a stroke in 1999. He was assisted by his wife June and sister, Gloria Katz, as he described the 45 days he spent in a German prisoner of war hospital.

In November 1944, Radar was part of a prisoner of war exchange and was granted his freedom.

He received the Legion of Honor Award from former French President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007.
