SHOREHAM - Students at Shoreham-Wading River High School got a firsthand lesson Monday on the dangers of driving while distracted or intoxicated.

They took part in the Town of Brookhaven's second annual Distracted Driving Program. The students had to drive a mini car through an obstacle course with impairment simulations, including goggles that mimic the effect of drunkenness.

Orange safety cones took the place of pedestrians, and many of the cones were clipped by student drivers.

Suffolk police also put on a demonstration to show what can happen in a rollover accident when an occupant is not wearing a seatbelt.

More than 400 students from Shoreham-Wading River High School have gone through the program.
