Strike suspended for Nassau Community College adjunct professors

The strike has been suspended for Nassau Community College adjunct professors.

The professors are expected to be back in the classrooms beginning on Monday.

News 12 Long Island has learned a meeting between the Adjunct Professor's Union and NCC officials has been scheduled for Wednesday.

The 3,000 part-time professors at the school say they have been without a contract for three years. Union President Charles Loiacono says they want a retroactive pay raise that covers the past three years and continues for another five.

Acting University President Dr. Kenneth Saunders says the teachers request would wipe out the school's fund balance. He says the full pay raise package would be about $64 million over 8 years, a sum he says is simply unsustainable.

School officials say the protesting teachers were in violation of the Taylor Law, which forbids public employees from going on strike.

A conciliator assigned by the NYS Public Employment Relations Board will try to reach a compromise with the two groups during next week’s meeting.
