MONTAUK - A group of Long Islanders will kick off a relay of remembrance to honor first responders who have died or are currently battling illnesses after working at the site of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Strength and Hope Walk, sponsored by the Ski’s Open Heart Foundation, will begin Wednesday morning in a 140-mile journey from Montauk Point to the World Trade Center site.

This year's relay will benefit a family from West Babylon. The husband and wife are retired New York City police officers who are now battling several Sept.11-related illnesses.

Wednesday marks the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center, collapsed a portion of the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and killed those onboard United Flight 93 in Shanksville, Penn.
