BRENTWOOD - Police say a machete-wielding Brentwood deli clerk was able to chase off a would-be robber who was armed with a gun, and the whole incident was captured on surveillance video.

It happened at the Stop and Shop Deli on Crooked Hill Road. The video shows a masked gunman aiming a .22-caliber gun at the clerk and firing a shot in his direction. The shot prompted the clerk to whip out a machete from behind the counter and chase the gunman. The suspect tried to fire off another shot, but the gun didn't go off.

Elena Alvarado, the owner of the deli, says her employee is still too afraid to talk about the incident because the suspect is still on the loose.

Police say the clerk was very lucky that he wasn't hurt. They advise holdup victims to comply with robbers' demands and simply hand over the money.

The robbery attempt happened on Sept. 25 at around 8 p.m. Police are urging anyone who has information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
