STEP deadline looms for LI

WOODBURY - Time is running out for Long Islanders hard-hit by Sandy to apply for free temporary home repairs.
Friday is the deadline for FEMA's STEP program, which was announced in November as a means of providing temporary repairs so Sandy victims could stay in their homes.
About 90,000 homes were damaged when Sandy hit Long Island. So far, the STEP program has helped about 600 of those homeowners.
More than 2,000 assessments have been done in Nassau. Officials say 417 jobs have been completed and 30 more are under way.
In Suffolk, nearly 500 assessments have been completed. Officials say 135 jobs are finished and 20 more are in progress.
To apply for the STEP program in Suffolk, dial 211. Nassau residents can call 888-684-4267.
