UNIONDALE - It was an intense afternoon at Hofstra University for dozens of Long Island children who were competing in a regional spelling bee.

It marked the second year that Hofstra hosted the event, which saw 99 spellers from schools across Nassau and Suffolk counties take a stab at spelling some tough words.

Today's winner was Isabelle Scott, of Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School in Setauket. Scott will go on to the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C., to compete against stellar spellers from around the nation.
