WESTBURY - A state trooper was injured on the Northern State Parkway this morning when he was struck by an out-of-control car while investigating a separate accident.
It happened at around 7 a.m. on the shoulder of the exit ramp for Glen Cove Road, on the westbound side of the highway. When the trooper stopped to investigate a single-car crash, a Honda Civic lost control and spun across all lanes, striking the state trooper's cruiser on the driver's side, police say.
The trooper was extricated from the vehicle and was taken to Winthrop University Hospital to be treated for injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening. The trooper has not been identified.
The driver of the Honda, identified as Christopher Contaldi, was treated for minor cuts that he sustained after entering the trooper's vehicle to help him, according to state police.
The incident shuttered the Glen Cove Road exit lanes for more than two hours, but they have since been reopened.
