WOODBURY - Last night, the state Senate voted to do away with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) payroll tax, which could help local schools and businesses.If the state Assembly also votes to eliminate the payroll tax and it is signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.), Long Island businesses and school districts would stop paying the MTA tax in 2014. The tax was implemented in 2009 to help close the MTA's budget gap.
