ALBANY - News 12 has learned that lawmakers are close to agreeing on a new state budget as the April 1 deadline nears.

News 12 Long Island's Doug Geed is in Albany, where lawmakers had a two-hour closed door meeting today.

State Senate Co-Leader Dean Skelos said Albany lawmakers are on the verge of a budget agreement that will deliver tax relief.

The tentative agreement is coming after almost weeklong, around-the-clock negotiations.

Skelos told News 12 that there's agreement on the size of the budget and the critical issue of how much state aid school districts will receive.  Skelos didn't provide details, but he also said the budget would provide other forms of tax breaks.

"There is going to be tax cuts that are aimed at job creation," he says. "There's going to be a tax freeze to help people with their real property taxes. So a lot of good things in this budget."
