NEW HYDE PARK - A specialized endoscope has been linked to a recent “superbug” outbreak in California.

The FDA has linked the superbug to patients who underwent a special endoscopic procedure called ERCP. Unlike a standard scope, Dr. Ian Storch tells News 12 Long Island that the device is a more sophisticated duodenoscope with tiny tubes used to maneuver a camera.

“It's not a scope that a gastroenterologist would typically have in their office,” says Storch.

News 12 Long Island has learned the North Shore-LIJ Heath System sent out a memo to doctors to raise awareness about sterilizing the hospital's scopes.

While there have been no reported cases in New York, the FDA is investigating more than 170 cases and two deaths nationwide.
