WESTBURY - A total of 12 teams from Long Island and one from Canada played in the Special Olympics New York Basketball Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Nassau County PAL Special Needs Unit hosted the games in Hicksville. The competition was comprised of four different divisions organized by ability, and each team was playing to win.

Michelle Rudoff, of Westbury, was one of the only female competitors during the tournament, but that did not bother her one bit.

“Being a girl, you got to show them that we can play just as tough as they can,” Rudoff told News 12.

Diane Colonna, of Special Olympics New York, says the competition was a good way for the young people to be among their peers and to turn their focus away from their disabilities.
