SOUTHOLD - The Southold Town Council voted unanimously today in favor of a new noise ordinance.

Southold residents along with others along the North Fork say they have been battling with businesses in the area that attract customers by putting on concerts and shows.  They say bars, hotels and vineyards in the area have been blasting music at all hours of the night and day.

Now, the new noise ordinance will prohibit amplified or airborne sound in excess of 50 decibels from 7 p.m.-7 a.m. on weeknights and 11 p.m.-7 a.m. on weekends.  Officials say the only exception to the new legislation is noise from farming equipment.

Violators can face up to $2,500 in fines for breaking the ordinance.
