WOODBURY - The Southern Poverty Law Center has released a new report that found the number of hate groups in the United States is rising, especially those that target Muslims.

And it found four on Long Island: Ku Klux Klan organizations in Hempstead and Hampton Bays, a white power group in Holbrook and a statewide anti-Muslim group called Act for America.

The report found that the number of anti-Muslim hate groups nearly tripled in the past year, from 34 in 2015 to 101 in 2016.

The SPLC says the rise in hate groups is in direct correlation with President Donald Trump's rhetoric toward minorities and Muslims during the presidential campaign.

"Trump's election has been absolutely electrifying to the radical right," says SPLC senior fellow Mark Potok.

The SPLC says the growth in hate groups has sparked a growing number of hate crimes nationwide, like the arson attack on a mosque in Victoria, Texas, that occurred just hours after the president enacted a ban from seven Muslim- majority countries.

News 12 contacted Wolf Tyr Productions, a music production company that was labeled as a white power group in Suffolk. A representative says they don't push any hate-filled or racist propaganda, and it's a mystery to them why they're included on the list.

The report also said the overall number of hate groups understates the actual level of organized hatred in the country because a growing number of extremists operate independently online.
