PINELAWN - A solemn Memorial Day ceremony was held at the Long Island National Cemetery Sunday to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The heroes who died in defense of the country were commemorated with songs, prayer and speeches.

Organizers say more than 5,000 volunteers posted flags next to every grave before Sunday's ceremony.
