Smithtown H.S. teacher calls Trump-supporting students 'racist' in online post

SMITHTOWN - A Smithtown teacher is facing backlash for a Facebook post calling some of her students racist.

The social media post was made by Veronica Welsh, of Smithtown High School West.

The post says, "This week is spirit week at Smithtown H.S. West. It's easy to spot which students are racist by the Trump gear they're sporting for USA Day."

The district has released a statement calling the post inappropriate and saying it's already taken action. There is no word what that action was. The post has since been taken down.

Shane Kielmeyer, a Smithtown father, says he is willing to give Welsh the benefit of the doubt.

"Sometimes people get heated and they type away and then they want to take it back. I'm sure she's a very good teacher," he told News 12 Long Island.

Others said Welsh should face a harsher penalty for her online post.

"I think a slap on the wrist is not enough," says Maria Columbo. "She needs to know that's not the right thing to do."

The district says Welsh is still employed, but has been "administratively reassigned."
