Smithtown committee recommends closing Nesconset school

Members of a Smithtown citizen advisory committee tonight voted to recommend closing down Nesconset Elementary School. The district is faced with a projected $11 million

NESCONSET - Members of a Smithtown citizen advisory committee tonight voted to recommend closing down Nesconset Elementary School. The district is faced with a projected $11 million budget gap and declining enrollment. Smithtown officials say shutting down one of its nine elementary schools would save about $1 million in personnel and operating expenses. The advisory committee spent the past year trying to decide which school to shutter. Four members voted tonight to shut down Mills Pond Elementary School, while 17 recommended Nesconset. The committee's recommendation will be presented to the Board of Education at a public hearing in early February. The board is expected to make a final decision on the closure by the end of that month.
