Smithtown Central S.D. to hold public budget hearing

SMITHTOWN - The Smithtown school board is getting ready to finalize the budget that will be presented to voters in May, which may include layoffs and cuts.

Smithtown School Superintendent Edward Ehmann tells News 12 Long Island they're looking at possibly eliminating 20 teaching positions through layoffs and retirement. Another 23 staffers could also get pink slips.

Varsity and junior varsity teams would not be affected by the proposed budget cuts, but junior varsity 2, or "B" JV, sports teams would be eliminated.

A public hearing on the Smithtown school budget will be held tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the administration building on New York Avenue.
