Slain officer's partner promoted to detective

MANHATTAN - The partner of the NYPD officer from West Babylon who was killed during an attempted robbery in Brooklyn last week was promoted to detective today.

According to police, Detective Peter Figoski was shot in the face by Lamont Pride while investigating a robbery. His partner, officer Glenn Estrada, of West Babylon, was tussling on the ground with another suspect at the time, but moments after the shot rang out and he saw Figoski badly injured, he let go of the man he was wrestling and chased down Pride.

A total of five people were arrested and charged in Figoski's murder.

During a ceremony at police headquarters in Lower Manhattan, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly praised Estrada for capturing the suspected cop killer. Kelly said it was Estrada's commander who recommended him for the promotion after learning how the officer pursued the suspects with calmness and determination.

Estrada's neighbors in West Babylon say he's a level-headed family man who is willing to help anyone.

Kelly said Detective Estrada will return to duty very soon at the 75th Precinct in Brooklyn.
