WANTAGH - Sizzling temperatures today had Long Islanders cranking up their air conditioners, diving into pools and gulping down icy drinks in an effort to ward off the piping hot heat.

Temperatures crept into the mid-90s, but it felt even warmer in the sun. The roasting weather isn’t in a hurry to leave, either: News 12 Long Island meteorologists are forecasting temperatures in the 90s for every day through Friday.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Nassau and Suffolk counties, which will be in effect through Wednesday evening.

Towns across the Island opened emergency cooling centers to offer residents somewhere to go to cool down and relax. In Nassau, all of the major county pools extended their hours through 8 p.m. until Wednesday. Many public beaches across Long Island are also staying open later.

LIPA says it expects to have enough energy to be able to meet this week's high demand, but officials are still urging everyone to use their air conditioners wisely and attempt to conserve energy.
