SHELTER ISLAND - A Shelter Island couple is helping a war veteran by giving him a special gift in honor of their son.

Chrys and Frank Kestler say their 24-year-old son, Lt. Joseph Thienart, dreamed of owning a red Mustang and they planned to present him with one when he returned from Afghanistan. But Thienart was killed in 2010 while protecting his platoon from an IED.

The Kestlers didn't know what to do with the car for nearly three years, before they decided to donate the car to a veteran in need. Last night, the Kestlers donated the Mustang to Frank Miller, a Vietnam War veteran from Lindenhurst. Miller lost his car during February's blizzard when it got stuck in the snow and caught fire.

Chrys says it would make her son very happy, knowing his car would be helping a fellow veteran.
